He was committed to a naturalistic art that explored the changing play of light. He frequently painted snow scenes, showing solitary figures in wintry streets or parks and the backgrounds are newly constructed areas of Paris, London fogs, Italian sunshine scenes, or unexpected views on Swiss Lakes.

Giuseppe de Nittis lived a short life, at age 38, he suddenly died from a stroke in 1884. According to the will, his widow Léontine donated a large part of his paintings to his native town Barletta in the Southern Italian region of Apulia.

His art approach was far away from the rigid rules of the academic art. Come and join a private guided tour to see the masterful command of light and shade by De Nittis. https://privatemilantours.com/contatto/Edmond de Goncourt
