In Milan, the ideal relationship between art and architecture goes back to the ancient roman time and gradually developed.
Can you imagine the gigantic ancient Roman columns in front of the Basilica of S. Lorenzo without Corinthian capitals? The Duomo with the “later addition” of the stained-glass windows?
And the spectacular Art Nouveau façades and their outstanding wrought iron railings and balconies by Alessandro Mazzucotelli in floral style?
What the Palazzo dell’Arengario would be without the five plastic reliefs by Arturo Martini about the history of Milan? Contact Barbara Quarello now
And Filippo Meda square? It would no longer be the same without the disc-shaped sculpture in gilded bronze that stands in the middle. It is by Arnaldo Pomodoro whose glistening artworks like the series of bas-reliefs enhance the façades of some Milanese houses.
Lucio Fontana was always interested in the relationship between space, work, and visitor, which is why he kept up close ties to the world of architecture throughout his career. He collaborated with some of the most important Italian architects and studios of the time, including Gio Ponti, Piero Portaluppi, BBPR, Marco Zanuso, Vittorio Gregotti. Last but not least, we can admire his skills in ceramics in quite a few houses scattered in the historical centre of Milan.
