In February 313 the outcome of a political agreement changed forever the history of the world over. It happened in Milan and the players were two Roman emperors, Constantine I and Licinius. It is about the Edict of Milan, a proclamation that permanently established religious toleration for Christianity within the Roman Empire.
Milan has been a Christian-majority city since the late Roman Empire. Its religious history was marked by the figure of St. Ambrose, whose heritage includes the Ambrosian Rite, Rito Ambrosiano. The Rite varies slightly from the canonical Roman Rite liturgy, with differences in the mass, liturgical year (Lent starts four days later than in the Roman Rite), baptism, rite of funerals, priest clothes, and sacred music (use of the Ambrosian chant rather than Gregorian).
The figure who marked the modern history of the church of Milan was Saint Charles Borromeo, archbishop of Milan from 1564 to 1584, who was a leading figure during the Counter-Reformation. A large number of churches dedicated to him are to be found in Europe and North America. Contact Barbara Quarello now
In the XX century, two Cardinal Archbishops of Milan were elected popes, in 1922 Achille Ratti as Pope Pius XI, and in 1963 Giovanni Battista Montini as Pope Paul VI. The assistant of the latter, Dandolo Bellini, founded one of the first museum of contemporary religious art in the world: Villa Clerici.
Milan’s Archdiocese is the largest in Europe and covers the majority of the areas of the metropolitan Milan, Monza and Brianza, Lecco and Varese.
Votive columns, ex-voto images and votive niches still survive both in the historical centre, on the outskirts and in courtyards of old houses.
