El Greco, the Greek
Until February 25th, 2024
Milan, Palazzo Reale
El Greco, the Greek, is the nickname for Dominikos Theotokopoulos (Crete, 1541– Toledo, 1614). When he was born the island of Crete was part of the Republic of Venice which he reached at the age of about 26 and where he met Titian. His career developed in Spain, in Toledo, the ex-capital of the country and he hoped to become the official painter of the King Phillip II of Spain.
This is the first monographic exhibition dedicated to the great painter that Milan hosts at the Royal Palace. There are 41 paintings of the Cretan artist which come from the most important museums. For instance, the National Gallery of Art in Washington lent the famous “Saint Martin and the beggar” and the Laocoon while other extraordinary works come from Spanish ecclesiastical institutions such as the Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian.
The exhibition is an unmissable opportunity to know this great artist.
