Valpolicella wine region – Amarone wine tastings

Day trip from Milan back and forth

My tailor-made private wine tours are for passionate wine lovers. I will give you a chance to discover some excellent family-run boutique wineries and taste extraordinary, handcrafted wines on the hills of Valpolicella.

Valpolicella is a viticultural zone of the province of Verona, east of Lake Garda. The hilly agricultural and marble-quarrying region of small holdings north of the river Adige is famous for the wine production of Valpolicella and Amarone. The name “Valpolicella” comes from the Latin vallis pulicellae, valley of river deposits. Valpolicella is composed of various villages, we will focus on Negrar, Sant’Ambrogio di Valpolicella and San Giorgio.

Valpolicella wine tastingsWe will enter independent winegrowers and stroll through their vineyards to see the typical Pergola veronese from where you will enjoy a gorgeous panoramic view of the wide valley and of the Lake Garda. After visiting the wine cellars and discovering the winemaking process you will enjoy wine tastings, from Valpolicella Classico to Superiore, Riserva and Amarone, paired with local cold cuts, cheeses and local extra virgin olive oil. The old winemaking techniques leading to the creation of the wine are still used nowadays in every aspect. The whole production is carried out following the tradition and with great respect for nature, starting from the pruning, natural fertilisation and attention to grape bunches, up to the harvesting. The natural appassimento, drying process,  and all other stages of winemaking are carried out with special artisanal attention.

The fields are all divided in terraces called marogne, dry stone walls that enable to grow vines on a steep slope and, at the same time, ensure great exposure to the sun. The idea behind their construction is to facilitate the drainage of water towards the valley.
